Goal:
The Voice Services AG in the XML-Initiative is a cross-industry work group focused on promoting the use of natural-language speech-driven interfaces using the W3C-approved standard language VoiceXML, for optimizing communication processes in enterprise, industry and

Background:
While HTML allows users to see and click data in a web-browser, VoiceXML allows users to hear and speak to data through a telephone or any internet-based device for that matter. As a standard markup language, VoiceXML allows rapid interface development, as well as easy, flexible, scalable integration with most existing data management
systems.
The prime advantage of Voice Services is that you only need a telephone to access and control Internet-based data, so that you are extremely mobile and not reliant on a bulky PC. And nearly everyone knows how to
use a telephone.
Voice Services save time and money by helping automate routine processes. For example: in Call Centers or in government offices where thousands of callers a day ask the same question: "What is my account balance?" or "What are your opening times?" Costs per call can be reduced in extreme cases from 4 Euros to 40 cents when compared to the costs of today, bringing ROIs of 6 to 12 months.
Voice Services also allow "hands-free, eyes-free" control of data much more efficiently, especially for people often using their hands at work, thus speeding up the data entry process, saving many hours a day at the computer, for example for:
- repairmen ordering replacement parts by phone while at a customer,
- workers documenting their steps in production or in quality control
using a headset,
- traveling salesmen documenting sales and calling up customer info
over the phone while driving
- waitress in a restaurant carrying trays and taking orders into a
microphone
- doctors documenting patient records directly into a microphone
- commissioning in a warehouse over a headset while carrying items
